Kicking Off 2011 With More New Introductions From Peter Moore
Peter Moore, former Hilliers Propagator and Semi retired Longstock Park Nursery Propagator has been responsible for the breeding of many successful new introductions over the years including Choisya Aztec Pearl and Goldfinger and also Buddleia Silver Anniversary all of which have become staple varieties for UK production. 2009 Saw the launch of Choisya White Dazzler, supplied by New Place Nurseries to Wyevale, who launched it to the retail sector, in fact it was named by a Wyevale staff Member. This Choisya has a dense, compact habit with even branching. It is covered by fragrant white flowers in Spring and Autumn. What strikes me most about this plant is the reliability in production, we have found that it needs less trims to make a quality saleable young plant and the crop uniformity is second to none. This year will see more examples of Peter’s work hitting the Garden Centres. Weigela Ruby Anniversary, which is a hybrid between Evita and Folis Purpureus, It has rich green foliage with a tinge of bronze, and rich ruby flowers in summer. When pruned hard after flowering the re-growth will give superb bronze autumn colour. Ruby Anniversary had a well branched and compact habit which like the Choisya gives better uniformity. Oenothera Give Me Sunshine is an excellent introduction, it is a compact and full growing perennial which has a mass of bright yellow flowers from Mid May, it will tolerate higher temperatures and will flower much longer than existing varieties. I have trialed this plant for several years and it never fails to attract attention from visitors to our nursery. Spiraea Sparkling Champagne is Unique new form of Spiraea. In the spring the new leaves are like ‘Magic Carpet’, fading to lime green in May; flowers have red stamens and white petals in large flattened heads. Flowering again late August to September. Excellent addition to the summer flowering shrubs range, with an added bonus of red and yellow leaves in Autumn. Peter has many more examples of his breeding work yet to be launched, in fact there are several of his latest plants being trialed both here at Seiont and several other ALP member nurseries.
